ALBANY – State Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson (D-Newburgh) has announced $15,000 in funding to support Meals on Wheels of Greater Newburgh, a nonprofit that has been serving the community for more than five decades. The funding will help the organization continue providing meals and companionship to local residents who depend on the service.
A Lifeline for the Community
Founded in 1972, Meals on Wheels of Greater Newburgh has delivered more than half a million meals to area residents. The program is not limited by income, making it accessible to anyone in need. For many recipients, it provides not just nutrition but vital human interaction.
“Meals on Wheels serves everybody who needs it, no matter their income,” Jacobson said. “It also brings an important part of the day to so many people, because they can see and talk to someone. A lot of the people served by Meals on Wheels live alone.”
More Than Just a Meal
The program’s impact goes beyond food delivery. Carole McDermott, president of the organization’s board, described the service as “a meal plus a friendly visit.” She emphasized that the need has only grown in recent years, with many older adults facing health challenges, limited mobility, and isolation.
The daily check-in provided by volunteers often serves as a safety net, ensuring that recipients have consistent contact with someone who can offer help if needed.
Recognizing Volunteer Dedication
Assemblyman Jacobson highlighted the critical role of volunteers, noting that the program depends on their time and commitment.
“It takes so much dedication from the volunteers to prepare and deliver meals every day,” he said.
These volunteers often develop close bonds with the people they serve, reinforcing the community spirit that has kept the program running strong for over 50 years.
Strengthening Local Support
The $15,000 secured by Jacobson will help sustain the nonprofit’s operations, covering essential costs related to food preparation, delivery, and volunteer coordination. For Meals on Wheels, every dollar directly supports its mission of caring for vulnerable residents.
Local leaders and community members have praised the funding, recognizing the organization as a cornerstone of social support in Newburgh. With food insecurity and isolation remaining challenges for many seniors, continued investment in programs like Meals on Wheels is seen as vital.
Looking Ahead
As the nonprofit marks over half a century of service, the new funding represents both recognition of its impact and a step toward ensuring its future stability. Leaders at Meals on Wheels hope the support will also inspire more volunteers and donors to get involved.
Jacobson reaffirmed his commitment to backing community programs that strengthen Newburgh.
“Meals on Wheels is about more than food—it’s about dignity, care, and connection,” he said.
For residents who depend on the service, that commitment ensures that Meals on Wheels will remain a dependable source of nourishment and companionship for years to come.
