ALBANY, N.Y. – State Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson (D–Newburgh) has announced $15,000 in state funding for Meals on Wheels of Greater Newburgh, a nonprofit that has been serving the community for more than five decades.
Supporting a Lifeline for Seniors
Founded in 1972, Meals on Wheels of Greater Newburgh has provided more than 500,000 meals to residents in need. The program not only delivers food but also offers a vital social connection to many seniors who might otherwise spend their days alone.
“Meals on Wheels serves everybody who needs it, no matter their income,” Jacobson said. “It also brings an important part of the day to so many people, because they can see and talk to someone. A lot of the people served by Meals on Wheels live alone.”
A Meal and a Friendly Visit
Carole McDermott, president of the organization’s board, emphasized that the program is about more than just food.
“It’s a meal plus a friendly visit,” she said. “And this year, that need has only grown stronger.”
For many recipients, the interaction with volunteers is as valuable as the meal itself, providing comfort and reassurance that they are not forgotten.
Powered by Volunteers
Jacobson praised the dedication of the volunteers who make the program possible.
“It takes so much dedication from the volunteers to prepare and deliver meals every day,” he said. “Their service is extraordinary, and this funding will help them continue to reach those who rely on Meals on Wheels the most.”
Volunteers are at the heart of the nonprofit’s mission, spending countless hours ensuring that meals are prepared, packaged, and delivered on time. Many also take the opportunity to check in on clients’ well-being, making the program a cornerstone of community care.
Meeting a Growing Demand
Like many similar organizations across the country, Meals on Wheels of Greater Newburgh has faced increased demand in recent years. Rising food costs, an aging population, and the lingering effects of the pandemic have all contributed to the need for expanded services.
The $15,000 in state funding secured by Jacobson will help the nonprofit offset these challenges and continue its work of feeding and supporting vulnerable residents.
A Legacy of Service
For more than 50 years, Meals on Wheels of Greater Newburgh has been a lifeline for seniors and homebound residents, delivering not only nourishment but also human connection.
With new funding in place, the organization is poised to strengthen its mission and ensure that no one in the community goes hungry—or feels forgotten.
