A high-speed vehicle pursuit along one of the Hudson Valley’s busiest highways has resulted in the arrest of a Montgomery man, now facing multiple charges, including drug possession and fleeing police.
Traffic Violations Spark Pursuit
According to a press release from the New York State Police, the incident unfolded on Sunday, July 20, at approximately 4:04 p.m., when troopers on patrol in the town of Greenville observed a 2005 GMC Yukon traveling eastbound on Interstate 84 in violation of multiple traffic laws.
Troopers attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver failed to comply, prompting a brief pursuit through parts of Orange County.
Pursuit Ends in Wallkill
The chase came to an end when the suspect’s vehicle stopped on Schutt Road in the town of Wallkill. Police say the 57-year-old man from Montgomery was taken into custody without further incident. No injuries or crashes were reported during the pursuit.
Narcotics Thrown From Vehicle
While investigating the incident, troopers discovered that the suspect had thrown an object from the vehicle during the pursuit. That object was later recovered and determined to contain approximately 0.8 grams of cocaine, according to authorities.
This discovery, combined with the suspect’s attempt to flee, added to the growing list of charges.
Charges Filed
The suspect is facing the following charges:
-
Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 5th Degree (Felony)
-
Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle in the 3rd Degree
-
Multiple traffic violations
Despite the seriousness of the charges, police say the suspect was processed and released with an appearance ticket. He is scheduled to appear in court in mid-August to answer the charges.
Pattern of Dangerous Behavior
This latest incident adds to a series of recent police pursuits across New York, highlighting concerns over reckless driving and drug-related offenses. Law enforcement officials continue to emphasize the dangers of fleeing from traffic stops—not only for those involved but for innocent motorists nearby.
Public Reminder
Authorities are reminding the public that attempting to flee law enforcement only escalates legal consequences and places lives at risk. The New York State Police urge drivers to comply with traffic stops and seek legal help if facing serious charges.
The investigation remains ongoing.
