WASHINGTON (7News) — The final week of July is kicking off with dangerous heat levels across the D.C. region. The 7News First Alert Weather Team has issued a Heat Alert from Monday through Wednesday, as temperatures climb into the upper 90s and the heat index exceeds 100 degrees.
Scorching Start to the Week
On Monday, while the region will avoid thunderstorms, the heat index will reach the low 100s during peak afternoon hours. Meteorologists are urging residents to practice heat safety by:
-
Staying hydrated
-
Taking frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning
-
Monitoring themselves and others for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke
Overnight conditions will remain dry, with mild temperatures in the 70s, offering little relief from the daytime heat.
Intensifying Heat Through Midweek
The heat only intensifies on Tuesday, with highs in the mid-90s and a heat index near 105 degrees. The National Weather Service is expected to issue heat advisories across the region as conditions become increasingly hazardous.
By Wednesday, the final day of this intense heat wave, temperatures will peak in the mid to upper 90s, and the heat index may exceed 105 degrees, prompting additional advisories.
Relief on the Horizon
Relief from the oppressive heat arrives on Thursday, when a mid-summer cold front sweeps through the area. Expect showers and thunderstorms throughout the day, followed by a shift to cooler northerly winds, bringing down temperatures and humidity levels.
