Gay Men's Chorus Launches Pride Month with Free Concert at Riggs Washington Hotel

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Pride Month officially began on a high note in the nation’s capital as the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC (GMCW) delivered a powerful free concert at the Riggs Washington Hotel on Monday evening. The event marked the start of a series of vibrant and inclusive performances celebrating LGBTQ+ voices and visibility throughout the city.

The performance featured Potomac Fever, GMCW’s dynamic pop a cappella ensemble, known for its engaging vocals and energetic presence. The group drew a crowd at the upscale downtown venue, offering a joyful and moving kickoff to Pride Month 2025.

“This is what Pride is all about—community, celebration, and resilience,” said chorus member Shawn Morris, who spoke passionately about the mission behind the music. “We are all about inclusivity, lifting each other up, and taking care of one another.”

Part of a Larger Celebration: WorldPride Choral Festival

Monday’s performance was just the beginning of a broader celebration tied to the WorldPride International Choral Festival, which is taking place in Washington, D.C. from May 24 through June 8, 2025. The festival brings together vocal groups from across the country to perform pop-up concerts in a variety of settings—both formal and unexpected.

GMCW is leading the charge locally, with multiple ensembles participating, including Potomac Fever, Rock Creek Singers, Seasons of Love, GenOUT Youth Chorus, and 17th Street Dance. These groups will perform at venues throughout the District, such as:

  • Atlas Performing Arts Center

  • Woolly Mammoth Theatre

  • Union Market

  • Sixth & I Historic Synagogue

  • National City Church

  • St. Thomas’ Parish

  • Live at 10th & G

  • And more.

Each performance is designed to celebrate LGBTQ+ identity through music while engaging the public in a visible and unifying way.

A Statement Through Song

More than just entertainment, the performances carry a powerful message of presence and perseverance. As debates over LGBTQ+ rights continue to emerge nationwide, events like these offer a platform for artistic resistance and joyful affirmation.

“The whole purpose of the pushback against us is to silence us and put us back in the closet,” said Morris. “WorldPride gives us a larger stage to say, ‘We’re not going anywhere. We’re here. We’ve always been here.’

Through harmonies and heart, the Gay Men’s Chorus is not only entertaining D.C. residents and visitors but also reminding everyone of the strength found in community and expression.
