A former FedEx driver is facing serious charges after allegedly stealing more than $210,000 worth of cell phones from a shipping facility in Alexandria, Virginia. The devices were en route to a Verizon Wireless store in nearby Springfield.
$210K in Stolen Phones
According to a recently unsealed search warrant affidavit, the incident occurred at the FedEx shipping center located at 4720 Eisenhower Avenue. Authorities allege that the 59-year-old suspect, a Maryland resident, intercepted multiple packages containing Verizon cell phones before they could be delivered to their intended destination — the Verizon store at 6432 Springfield Plaza.
Police say internal data from FedEx played a key role in uncovering the theft.
“Surveillance system videos in conjunction with data from package scans and other internal reports from the FedEx facility showed the packages were intercepted and stolen prior to their proper delivery,” the affidavit states.
In total, the stolen goods were valued at $210,698.84, with the majority of items consisting of brand-new mobile phones.
Investigation and Arrest
FedEx suspended the suspect from his position on January 15, shortly after the missing packages were flagged. A detailed internal review followed, leading to the involvement of local law enforcement.
Investigators relied heavily on FedEx’s surveillance footage and package-tracking systems, which provided timestamped scans and delivery logs. These tools allowed them to pinpoint when and where the packages disappeared within the facility.
The suspect was arrested on May 21. He was released the same day on personal recognizance, meaning he was not required to post bail.
What Happens Next?
The accused is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment on June 6, where he will formally face a charge of grand larceny. In Virginia, grand larceny is a felony offense and can carry significant penalties, including prison time and restitution.
Neither FedEx nor Verizon has issued public statements regarding the case as of this writing.
A Cautionary Tale for Delivery Security
This incident highlights the importance of secure logistics and package-tracking systems in detecting internal theft. While rare, such breaches underscore the potential vulnerabilities in high-value shipping operations — particularly when employees have direct access to valuable inventory.
The Alexandria Police Department continues to investigate whether any additional individuals were involved or if similar thefts may have gone undetected.
Stay tuned for updates following the arraignment on June 6, as the case proceeds through the court system.
