WASHINGTON, D.C. — A deadly crash early Saturday morning brought traffic on D.C. Route 295 to a standstill for more than 10 hours as police investigated the scene.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the collision occurred before 2:15 a.m. on the northbound lanes of DC-295, between the 11th Street Bridge and Pennsylvania Avenue Southeast.
Responding officers found one person unconscious and not breathing at the scene. The victim was later pronounced dead. At this time, authorities have not released the individual’s name, age, or gender.
Hit-and-Run Suspected
Police said the occupants of the striking vehicle fled the scene on foot, leaving behind the crash site and the victim. The nature of the crash and the number of vehicles involved have not yet been disclosed.
Law enforcement shut down the entire stretch of northbound DC-295 in the area for an extended crash reconstruction and investigation. The closure caused significant delays for early morning commuters and travelers.
Roadway Reopens After Hours-Long Closure
The crash site was not cleared until shortly before 12:30 p.m., nearly 10 hours after the incident, allowing DC-295 northbound traffic to resume.
No arrests have been made at this time, and police have yet to provide a detailed suspect description. The investigation is ongoing.
