DURHAM, N.C. – The family of 21-year-old London Powers, a North Carolina Central University student, says she was a victim of domestic violence before she was fatally shot on Monday afternoon.
Durham Police found Powers, a Washington, D.C., native, and 23-year-old Damien Tinsley with gunshot wounds at the Camden Pointe apartments. Tinsley died at the scene, while Powers died Tuesday morning at the hospital.
Mother Says Daughter Was Leaving the Relationship
According to her mother, Tia Powers, London had gone to the apartment that day to collect her belongings.
“She was going back to that apartment to get her things out of there. She was focused on her goals, she was leaving,” Tia Powers said.
She confirmed that her daughter and Tinsley had been in a relationship and that London had contacted police multiple times about threats and violence.
Previous Incidents Alleged
Tia Powers said the shooting was not the first act of gun violence her daughter experienced.
“He shot at her previously a couple of weeks ago and it grazed her. She called them then, and she called them the time after that,” she told WRAL, urging police to act more urgently when women report threats to their safety.
Remembered as Kind and Generous
Friends and coworkers described London as warm-hearted and caring.
“She wasn’t the type of person to cause any trouble. She didn’t deserve it… For that to happen to her, I feel like that was wrong,” said coworker De’Andre Gainer.
Durham Police have not released additional details about the events leading up to the shooting. The investigation remains ongoing.
