Failed Towing Attempt Leaves University Place Business Damaged; Authorities Seek Suspects

UNIVERSITY PLACE, WA — A failed towing attempt ended in destruction at a University Place restaurant, and Pierce County deputies are now searching for a man and woman who fled the scene after causing extensive damage.

The bizarre incident, which unfolded in the parking lot of a local AutoZone, was captured on surveillance video. It shows a white Honda Pilot attempting to tow a broken-down vehicle. Instead, the situation escalated into a series of collisions that left the nearby Pho and Teriyaki restaurant with a smashed storefront.

What Happened

According to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, a man was seen trying to tow a disabled vehicle using a tow strap connected to his Honda Pilot. But as he pulled across the lot, the strap snapped, and the untethered car rolled uncontrollably, crashing into the lobby of Pho and Teriyaki.

“Just when you think it couldn’t get worse, it becomes a lot worse,” said Deputy Carly Cappetto.

Undeterred, the driver made another attempt. He repositioned the tow vehicle and tried again—only for the tow strap to snap a second time, sending the car once more into the restaurant.

Final Attempt and Abandonment

On a third attempt, the driver attached a longer tow strap and began dragging the vehicle through the parking lot. But the chaos didn’t end there. The car became stuck against a curb and a retention wall, and yet again, the strap broke.

“Essentially at that point, I think the driver and his female passenger realized this was a total loss,” Deputy Cappetto said.

With the vehicle now immobile, the suspects abandoned the scene, leaving the damaged car behind and fleeing in the white Honda Pilot.

Investigation Underway

The incident is being investigated as a hit-and-run collision, and law enforcement is now seeking public assistance to identify the suspects and locate the Honda Pilot involved.

“There are proper and safe ways to tow a vehicle,” said Cappetto. “If you don’t know how to do that, reach out to any tow company or even the sheriff’s office. We can provide resources.”

How to Help

If you have any information about the suspects or the vehicle involved, you’re urged to contact Crime Stoppers of Tacoma-Pierce County. Tips can be submitted anonymously.

Authorities hope to locate the individuals responsible and prevent similar reckless behavior from causing further harm to local businesses or the community.
