PORTLAND, Ore. — The St. Johns Bridge was temporarily closed during the Tuesday afternoon commute as emergency crews responded to a situation involving a person in a mental health crisis.
According to Portland Fire & Rescue, the incident was reported around 3:30 p.m. on the bridge, prompting immediate action to ensure the individual’s safety and secure the area. As a result, traffic was halted in both directions, causing major delays for drivers traveling on Highway 30 and through North Portland.
Authorities urged commuters to find alternate routes across the Columbia River during the closure. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) later updated its site to show the bridge had reopened around 5:30 p.m., but congestion and travel delays remained for some time.
Officials have not released further details about the individual involved, but the case highlights the importance of mental health awareness and support.
