Emergency Repairs Continue After Major Sewage Spill in Northeast D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Days after a massive sewage spill contaminated parts of Northeast D.C., officials and residents are still grappling with the aftermath. On Monday, a 108-inch sanitary sewer main broke near Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, spilling an estimated 6,200 gallons of untreated wastewater into nearby streets and waterways.

Where It Happened

The rupture occurred at Anacostia Avenue and Ponds Street NE, where two overflows from the broken pipe released diluted sewage into the street and into a waterway that eventually flows into the Anacostia River. The incident has prompted a full-scale emergency response from DC Water, the agency responsible for the city’s sewer and wastewater systems.

Impact on Infrastructure and Access

The break in the sewer line not only caused flooding but also led to the formation of a large sinkhole in the 1500 block of Anacostia Avenue NE. In response, officials have closed roadways, park entrances, and parking areas near the site for safety.

DC Water has since erected a berm to prevent further overflows and confirmed that no additional spills have occurred since the initial incident.

“We continue to monitor the situation and are installing shorting around the pipe to provide more permanent containment while repairs are underway,” DC Water said in a statement on Thursday.

Drinking Water Not Affected

DC Water emphasized that the city’s drinking water system is completely separate from the wastewater infrastructure and was not impacted by the sewer overflow. Residents can continue to use tap water safely.

Ongoing Repairs and Cleanup

Crews are working around the clock to:

  • Contain the remaining spill

  • Disinfect contaminated areas

  • Repair the broken sewer line

However, officials warn that full repairs could take several weeks, given the size and complexity of the damaged pipe.

What Residents Should Do

Residents living in or traveling through the affected areas are urged to avoid contact with the spill site and to take precautionary measures if their property has been affected.

DC Water recommends the following:

  • Stay away from visibly contaminated areas.

  • Document all damages or losses with photographs, dates, and itemized costs.

  • Report any property damage or health concerns to DC Water at (202) 612-3400 or online at dcwater.com.

Environmental Concerns

While no official health warnings have been issued related to the spill, the incident raises concerns about the ongoing vulnerability of D.C.’s aging sewer infrastructure—particularly in areas near environmentally sensitive sites like the Anacostia River and its tributaries.

Looking Ahead

With emergency repairs underway and no further overflows reported, officials hope to fully contain the situation in the coming days. Still, for residents of Northeast D.C., the spill serves as a reminder of the fragility of critical infrastructure and the importance of long-term investment in public works systems.

More updates will be provided as repairs progress and impacted roads and parks are reopened.
