DUI Suspect Arrested in Fatal Hit-and-Run Collision in Palo Alto

PALO ALTO, Calif. — A 52-year-old man from East Palo Alto is facing multiple felony charges following a series of hit-and-run collisions that occurred Wednesday night, one of which tragically claimed the life of an elderly woman.

The suspect, identified as Ignacio Estrada, was arrested by authorities on charges including vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence causing injury, and hit-and-run causing injury. He is currently being held without bail at the Santa Clara County Main Jail.

A Night of Chaos and Tragedy

The chain of events began around 9:05 p.m. on Wednesday evening, when officers with the Palo Alto Police Department responded to a report of a pedestrian struck in the 1200 block of Forest Avenue, a typically quiet residential neighborhood not far from downtown Palo Alto.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found an elderly woman unconscious in the roadway, suffering from severe injuries. Paramedics quickly transported her to a nearby hospital, but despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The woman, whose identity has not yet been publicly released pending family notification, was reportedly crossing the street near the intersection of Forest Avenue and Lincoln Avenue when she was hit.

Additional Hit-and-Run Discovered

While investigators were working the scene on Forest Avenue, they received new information about a second hit-and-run collision that had occurred earlier that evening.

The earlier crash took place at the intersection of Channing Avenue and Middlefield Road, just blocks away from the fatal incident. According to officials, no injuries were reported in that crash, but the driver had fled the scene without stopping, drawing increased suspicion.

By connecting evidence and witness reports from both locations, police were able to link the two incidents and began searching for the suspect vehicle involved.

Suspect Located and Arrested in East Palo Alto

Following an intensive search, officers located both the suspect and his vehicle in the 1800 block of East Bayshore Road in East Palo Alto, just across the city boundary. Estrada was taken into custody without further incident and transported to Santa Clara County Main Jail.

The vehicle showed signs of damage consistent with the collisions, and authorities believe Estrada was operating the car under the influence of alcohol or another controlled substance at the time of the crashes.

Charges and Legal Consequences

Ignacio Estrada now faces several serious felony charges, including:

  • Vehicular manslaughter
  • DUI causing injury
  • Hit-and-run causing injury

Given the severity of the charges and the loss of life involved, prosecutors are expected to pursue the case aggressively. Estrada is currently being held without bail, and his court date has yet to be announced.

Authorities have not commented on whether Estrada has any prior DUI or driving-related offenses on his record, but that information is expected to emerge during upcoming court proceedings.

A Community in Shock

News of the fatal hit-and-run has sent shockwaves through the Palo Alto community, where pedestrian safety and traffic enforcement have long been points of concern. The area where the woman was struck is known for its walkability and residential character, making the incident all the more tragic.

Residents have expressed frustration and sadness over the incident. “It’s heartbreaking,” said one neighbor who lives near Forest Avenue. “She was just crossing the street, like any of us do every day. It’s terrifying to think that someone would flee after something like this.”

Ongoing Investigation and Public Assistance

The Palo Alto Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding both collisions. Officials are urging anyone who may have witnessed either crash or who has surveillance footage from the area to come forward.
