COLLEGE PARK, MD — A tragic single-vehicle accident claimed the life of a La Plata man early Friday morning when his car veered off the road and burst into flames on an Interstate 95 ramp in Prince George’s County.
According to Maryland State Police, the victim has been identified as 46-year-old Kenneth Bowie Jr. He was pronounced dead at the scene by personnel from Prince George’s County Fire/EMS.
Crash Details
The fatal crash occurred shortly after 3:20 a.m. on the ramp leading from southbound I-95 to southbound I-495, a heavily trafficked interchange in the College Park area.
Preliminary investigation indicates that Bowie’s Lincoln MKZ left the roadway, struck a guardrail, then collided with a concrete abutment before plummeting into a ravine. The vehicle then caught fire, making rescue efforts impossible.
Emergency Response and Investigation
Firefighters and emergency personnel responded swiftly but were unable to save the driver due to the intensity of the blaze. The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration assisted law enforcement with road closures to facilitate the on-scene investigation.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities have not yet determined whether speed, mechanical failure, or other factors contributed to the incident.
Community Impact
The crash caused temporary disruptions to traffic in the early morning hours, but more significantly, it has left a family and community mourning a sudden and tragic loss.
Further details will be released as the investigation progresses.
