Driver in Serious Vancouver Crash Identified, Death Ruled Suicide by Gunshot

VANCOUVER, Wash. (KATU) — Authorities have identified the driver involved in last week’s multi-vehicle crash on Mill Plain Boulevard as Matthew Haynes, 25, of Vancouver. The Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Haynes died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, ruling the manner of death as suicide.

The incident occurred on August 6, when Haynes, driving a tow truck, reportedly ran a red light and collided with several vehicles. According to the Vancouver Police Department, the crash sent about 10 people to local hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to severe.

Major Traffic Disruption

The crash forced authorities to shut down Mill Plain Boulevard between 160th and 164th avenues for several hours as emergency crews responded. The Vancouver Fire Department reported that one person was ejected from a vehicle, and two others had to be extricated by firefighters. The remaining victims were able to exit their vehicles without significant assistance.

Events After the Crash

Witnesses told police that Haynes fled the scene on foot toward a nearby apartment complex. Given information that he might have access to a firearm, police called in the SWAT team for assistance.

When there was no response at the door of Haynes’ apartment, officers deployed a drone to look inside. The drone’s video feed showed Haynes lying on the floor. SWAT medics entered the unit and confirmed he was deceased from a gunshot wound.

Community Impact

The crash and its aftermath have deeply affected the community, not only due to the number of people injured but also because of the tragic ending involving the driver. Authorities have not released details about what may have led Haynes to take his own life.
