DC Man Arrested After Benning Road Shootout

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A heated argument on Benning Road NE turned into gunfire early Wednesday, leaving one man injured and another facing multiple charges, police said.

The shooting occurred around 2:00 a.m. in the 2000 block of Benning Road NE. According to investigators, the dispute between the suspect and the victim escalated when the suspect pulled out a handgun and opened fire, striking the victim.

The wounded man was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

By Thursday, police had taken 31-year-old Brian Diggs of Southeast D.C. into custody. He is charged with:

  • Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun)

  • Carrying a Pistol Without a License

  • Possession of an Unregistered Firearm

  • Possession of Unregistered Ammunition

Authorities said Diggs was in possession of a firearm when he was arrested.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police have not disclosed further details about the motive or whether additional arrests are expected.
