D.C. Woman Indicted in Violent Metrobus Robbery and Stabbing Incident

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A routine late-night commute turned violent earlier this year when a passenger on a Metrobus was robbed and stabbed—an incident that has now led to a formal indictment.

On Wednesday, a D.C. grand jury indicted 29-year-old Tywanna Johnson, a resident of Washington, D.C., in connection with the January 22 attack. Johnson faces multiple felony charges, including:

Robbery while armed
Assault with intent to rob while armed
Assault with a dangerous weapon
Assault resulting in significant bodily injury while armed
Felony threats

What Happened on the Bus

The disturbing episode occurred just before midnight on January 22, while the Metrobus was traveling near 15th Street NE and Duncan Street NE.

According to prosecutors, Johnson approached another passenger and snatched their cellphone right out of their hands. Although the victim managed to retrieve the phone, the encounter quickly escalated.

Investigators say Johnson pulled a knife from her jacket and threatened to kill the passenger if they didn’t give the phone back. As the passenger attempted to move toward the front of the bus to escape, Johnson allegedly stabbed them in the lower back.

Immediate Arrest and Charges

Metro Transit Police responded swiftly to the scene. Johnson was taken into custody shortly after the incident. The injured passenger received medical attention for their injuries, which were described as significant but non-life-threatening.

The case is now proceeding in D.C. Superior Court, where a status hearing is scheduled for July 14. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jasmine Dohemann is prosecuting the case, with support from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and Metro Transit Police.
