Connecticut Teen Killed in Tragic Log Splitter Accident in South Salem

SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. — An 18-year-old from Ridgefield, Connecticut, lost his life on Wednesday evening following a devastating accident involving a log splitter at a private residence in South Salem, located in Westchester County.

The victim, identified as Brandon Gmelin, was pronounced dead at the scene despite emergency life-saving efforts. The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. on July 16, 2025.

Accident Involving Landscaping Equipment

According to New York State Police, Gmelin had been assisting with landscaping work at the South Salem residence. Earlier that day, a log splitter had been delivered to the property. At some point, while attempting to move the heavy piece of equipment, it began rolling down a sloped portion of the yard.

The machine struck Gmelin with fatal force, leaving him unresponsive. Authorities have not yet released details about what caused the log splitter to become mobile, but it appears the incident was an unfortunate accident during routine outdoor work.

Emergency Response and Investigation

Troopers from the New York State Police Somers barracks responded to the 911 call, alongside officers from the Town of Lewisboro Police Department and members of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

First responders arrived within minutes but were unable to revive Gmelin. He was officially declared deceased at the scene. The area was secured for several hours as law enforcement conducted a preliminary investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

As of now, authorities have not found any evidence of foul play, and the case is being treated as a tragic accident. The investigation remains active as officials continue to review the scene and speak with witnesses.

Community Mourning Loss of Young Life

News of Brandon Gmelin’s sudden passing has sent shockwaves through his hometown of Ridgefield, where he was known as a bright and hardworking young man. Friends, neighbors, and classmates have begun to share memories and condolences on social media, many expressing disbelief and sorrow over the tragic turn of events.

Local officials and school representatives have yet to issue formal statements, but grief counselors are expected to be made available to those in the community affected by the loss.

Reminder of Equipment Safety Risks

While the investigation continues, the accident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by heavy machinery and landscaping equipment—even during simple tasks. Log splitters, though commonly used for residential and commercial projects, can be extremely hazardous when not properly stabilized or operated on uneven terrain.

Safety experts advise that such equipment should always be used on flat, level ground and properly chocked or secured to prevent unintended movement.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have not yet announced whether further inspections or equipment testing will be conducted to determine if a mechanical failure contributed to the accident. At this time, no charges or violations have been filed, and investigators are treating the situation as accidental.

Anyone with additional information about the incident is encouraged to contact the New York State Police Somers barracks.

As the community mourns, many are left reflecting on a life cut far too short—and the importance of caution when handling potentially dangerous tools and machinery.
