Connecticut State Police Urge Caution After 3 Cruisers Hit in Separate Crashes

CONNECTICUT (WFSB) – Connecticut State Police are reminding drivers to stay alert and follow “Move Over” laws after three separate incidents over the weekend resulted in state police cruisers being struck on highways across the state.

Cruiser Hit Head-On by Wrong-Way Driver in Danbury

On June 14, a trooper attempting to intercept a wrong-way driver on Route 7 south in Danbury was hit head-on. The impact caused damage to the cruiser, but fortunately, the trooper sustained only minor injuries.

Rear-End Collision in Meriden

Also on June 14, a second cruiser was rear-ended during a routine traffic stop on Interstate 91 north in Meriden. The trooper inside the vehicle was again left with minor injuries.

Sideswiped While Investigating Crash in Waterbury

A third incident occurred the following day, June 15, on Interstate 84 west in Waterbury, where a cruiser was sideswiped while troopers were investigating an unrelated collision. That trooper, too, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Troopers Share Message: Move Over, Stay Alert

“These photos are a powerful reminder of the dangers our troopers face on the road every day,” Connecticut State Police said in a social media post. “Please use this as a reminder to stay alert on the road, give space, and slow down/move over for any disabled vehicles, maintenance vehicles and emergency vehicles.”

Connecticut’s “Move Over” law requires drivers to slow down and, if possible, change lanes away from stopped emergency vehicles. Violations can result in hefty fines and, as these incidents show, serious injuries.

No Additional Details Released

State Police have not released further information regarding the crashes or whether charges are being considered against the drivers involved.

A Stark Reminder for Motorists

As summer traffic increases, authorities are stressing that even a moment of inattention can have dangerous—and sometimes deadly—consequences. The recent collisions serve as a clear reminder: stay focused, slow down, and move over to protect those who protect others.
