POUGHKEEPSIE – Congressman Pat Ryan (D-NY-18) will host his third annual Fall Service Academy Information Session on Saturday, September 13, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Dyson Center at Marist University, 30 John Winslow Drive, Poughkeepsie. The event is free and open to the public.
Guiding the Next Generation of Leaders
The information session is designed for students, parents, and educators interested in learning about the U.S. Service Academy nomination process. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet members of Ryan’s nomination board, gain insight into the application timeline, and explore additional pathways to national service.
Congressman Ryan underscored the importance of helping young people access these opportunities:
“At West Point, I learned to live a life grounded in duty, honor, and service to our country. Nominating the next generation of leaders is an incredible privilege,” Ryan said. “Our military is also one of our most diverse institutions. My goal is to develop an officer corps that reflects our community. This starts by reaching out to everyone in New York’s 18th Congressional District and empowering them with the information and resources to take part in the nomination process – I hope to see any young person interested in pursuing national service there.”
A West Point Graduate Serving the District
Ryan is uniquely positioned to lead the session, as he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2004. He is the first West Point graduate ever elected to represent the Academy in Congress and currently serves on the House Armed Services Committee, which oversees the nation’s service academies.
His personal experience and professional role allow him to provide both inspiration and practical guidance to students considering a career in military service.
Understanding the Nomination Process
Students applying to the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Military Academy (West Point), or the U.S. Naval Academy must first secure a nomination. Nominations may come from a U.S. Senator or Representative, or through service-related pathways for enlisted military personnel. Additionally, the President and Vice President may issue nominations for certain academies.
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy is the exception, as it does not require a nomination for admission.
However, receiving a nomination is only the first step. Applicants must still apply directly to the academy and be offered an official appointment.
Benefits of a Service Academy Education
Admission to a service academy provides students with a four-year, tuition-free undergraduate education. Upon graduation, cadets and midshipmen are commissioned as officers in their respective branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. Each graduate is then required to serve a minimum five-year active duty commitment, gaining leadership experience while contributing to national defense.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants for nominations must meet baseline requirements as of July 1 of the year of intended admission:
-
Age: At least 17 years old but not beyond the 23rd birthday
-
Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen
-
Marital Status: Must be unmarried, not pregnant, and free of legal obligations to support children or other dependents
-
Residence: Must live within the boundaries of New York’s 18th Congressional District
-
Skill & Fitness: Must satisfy the medical, physical, and academic requirements set by the academy
These standards ensure that candidates are prepared for the demanding academic and physical environment of the academies.
Application Deadlines
The application period for Fall 2026 admission is currently open. Completed forms must be received by October 31, 2025, with the final deadline for submission set at November 1, 2025.
