Beloved High School Football Coach Among Four Killed in Tragic Head-On Crash

A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken a New York community following a devastating head-on collision that claimed four lives, including that of a beloved high school football coach. The crash, which occurred on Wednesday, May 14, has left families grieving, students in shock, and a school district mourning the loss of a dedicated mentor and leader.

The Crash on Taconic State Parkway

According to a statement from the New York State Police, the fatal accident happened around mile marker 9.2 on the Taconic State Parkway, in the town of New Castle, located in Westchester County, New York.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a 2014 Ram ProMaster van, driven by Yader A. Reyes, 50, of Long Branch, New Jersey, was traveling southbound when it suddenly veered across the center median into the northbound lanes. The van collided head-on with a 2024 Honda Accord traveling in the passing lane and driven by Robert Violante, 45, of Granite Springs, New York.

The collision was severe. Authorities stated that the force of the impact caused the van to overturn and catch fire. While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, the violent nature of the accident left little chance for survival.

Lives Lost in the Crash

Four people lost their lives in this tragic incident.

Robert Violante, the driver of the Honda Accord, was critically injured and transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Three passengers in the Ram ProMaster van were pronounced dead at the scene:

  • Odenis Balladares Martinez, 20, of Neptune, New Jersey

  • Harrison Mauricio Reyes Rivera, 34, of Long Branch, New Jersey

His death was confirmed in a heartfelt letter shared by Christopher Tully, Superintendent of Bergenfield Public Schools, who described Violante as more than just a coach or teacher — he was a mentor, a father figure, and a cherished member of the school community.

“His unexpected loss is deeply felt across our entire school community,” Tully wrote. “We know that Bergenfield High School and our town will never be the same without him.”

Tully praised Violante’s unwavering dedication to his students, his quiet strength, and his compassionate nature.

“He always put students first and believed in helping them reach their highest potential. Known for his compassion, dedication, and quiet strength, he instilled discipline through tough love and created lasting bonds with those lucky enough to be in his presence.”

Bergenfield Mayor Arvin Amatorio echoed the sentiments shared by many in the town, writing in a Facebook tribute:

“He was more than a coach. He was a mentor, a father figure, and a source of strength for our students and community. His impact as Head Football Coach and Dean of Students will never be forgotten.”
