WASHINGTON (7News) — A Baptist church in Northeast D.C. was vandalized Monday evening, with several stained-glass windows damaged, according to police.
Incident Details
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) reported that officers responded around 6 p.m. Monday to Mt. Olive Baptist Church, located at 1140 6th Street, NE, just off M Street.
According to the police report, multiple stained-glass windows of the church were shattered after a suspect hurled rocks at the building. A nearby vehicle also sustained damage, including broken windows and mirrors.
Suspect Caught on Camera
Investigators said surveillance video captured the suspect in the act, showing them throwing rocks at the church’s windows before turning to the van parked nearby. The suspect’s identity has not yet been released, and police have not disclosed a possible motive for the vandalism.
Community Impact
Church officials have not yet issued a statement, though the incident has drawn attention in the community. Faith leaders in the region have voiced concerns in recent years about increasing vandalism targeting houses of worship, including churches in Fairfax and Takoma Park.
