BREWSTER, NY – As the new school year approaches, Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) has teamed up with the Putnam Community Action Partnership (CAP) to kick off a Back to School Supplies Drive aimed at supporting 500 school-age children in need throughout Putnam and Westchester counties.
Supporting Students in Need
The drive is collecting essential items such as backpacks and $25 gift cards to major retailers like Staples, Target, and Walmart. These donations will be distributed to local families, helping ensure that every child starts the school year prepared and confident.
Donations are being accepted now through Wednesday, August 13, and several drop-off locations are available across both counties to make participation easy for community members.
A Message from Assemblyman Slater
“No kid should have to worry about whether they have a backpack or basic supplies on the first day of school,” said Assemblyman Slater. “This drive gives every student the chance to walk into class feeling prepared and supported. A small donation can go a long way, and it’s one of the simplest ways we can show up for each other as neighbors. If you’re able to, please consider donating!”
Slater’s efforts highlight a growing need to assist families facing financial hardship as inflation and rising costs continue to impact everyday essentials.
Community Partners Making a Difference
Marisa O’Leary, Director of Putnam CAP, emphasized the drive’s impact on young learners.
“Low-income children simply having basic school supplies can make all the difference, leveling the playing field and fostering a sense of belonging that is crucial for academic success and self-esteem. Putnam CAP is grateful for Assemblyman Slater’s unwavering support in highlighting this critical need and encouraging our community to donate,” said O’Leary.
