Armed Robbery Near Union Market Leaves Victim Without Green Card

Morning Robbery in Northeast D.C.

Police are investigating an armed robbery that took place near Union Market in Washington, D.C., on Monday morning. Authorities say a man was robbed at gunpoint, and among the stolen items was his green card, raising concerns for the victim’s personal security and immigration status.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), the robbery occurred around 7:09 a.m. in the 1200 block of 5th Street Northeast, just steps from the popular shopping and dining destination.

How the Robbery Happened

Investigators said two men approached the victim and threatened him with a black handgun. The suspects stole a brown wallet containing several important items, including:

  • Four banking cards

  • Two paychecks

  • $50 in cash

  • A D.C. driver’s license

  • The victim’s green card

Despite the confrontation, police said the victim was not physically harmed.

Suspects Fled in Mercedes-Benz

After the robbery, the suspects fled the scene in a silver Mercedes-Benz. Detectives are now reviewing evidence and seeking tips from the public to identify those responsible.

Location Adds to Alarm

The robbery’s proximity to Union Market adds to the concern. The marketplace has become one of the city’s busiest hubs for food, shopping, and community gatherings. Featuring more than 40 local vendors, it is known as both a dining hotspot and event space.

The incident has left community members uneasy, given that Union Market attracts a steady flow of residents and visitors throughout the day.

Police Investigation Continues

The MPD has not released detailed suspect descriptions, but detectives are asking anyone with information to come forward. While robberies involving stolen cash and cards are common, the theft of immigration documents like a green card can have significant consequences for victims, making recovery of the stolen property especially urgent.

Safety Concerns in the District

The robbery comes amid ongoing concerns about violent crime in Washington, D.C. Local leaders and police have been working to reassure residents and visitors as high-profile crimes occur near heavily trafficked areas.

Authorities emphasized that the victim was unharmed and that efforts are underway to track the stolen vehicle and suspects.
