The dog days of August? Not in Kent! If your idea of fun is great sales, fabulous food, toe-tapping tunes and jaw-dropping vintage cars, Kent is the place to be the first weekend of August.

Running from Thursday, August 6 through Sunday, August 9 this year, the Festival is free and offers super-sized retail therapy as well as entertainment for the whole family. Special fun for kids will include activities sponsored by Club Getaway, a Kids Carnival on Saturday morning sponsored by the Kent Memorial Library and face painting at the Fife ‘n Drum Gift Shop on Saturday and Sunday (donations in lieu of a fee will benefit Alzheimer’s Association’s CT Chapter.)

Kent’s unique and charming shops offer not-to-be-missed sales that include Terston Home Accents & Apparel, Sundog Shoe & Leather, Rolling River Antiques, Main Street Antiques, Koblenz & Co. Antique & Estate Jewelry, Country Clothes, the Primitive Home, House of Books, Backcountry Outfitters (plus Sakura Blade and Tool Sharpening), Heron American Craft Gallery, Kent Apothecary, J.J. Grogans, NM Watson Wild Bird Supply, David Gavin Salon, Pantages Gems and the Fife ‘n Drum Gift Shop. And don’t miss the 4 Day Sizzling Summer Porch Sale at the Davis IGA!

Fabulous food offerings include pork sliders and margaritas on the porch at the Fife ‘n Drum Restaurant, tasty gourmet items at the new 109 Cheese, various specials at JP Gifford’s Market, fresh baked goods on the porch of the Kent Coffee & Chocolate Co., and burgers, dogs, BBQ shrimp, fresh juices and a special Tropic Thunder Sundae at Annie Bananie Ice Cream. Backcountry Outfitters will host their annual free “Cheeseburgers in Paradise” on Friday evening and Kent Wine & Spirit will have wonderful wine tastings.

The Kent Park & Recreation will present the last in a series of “Free Concerts on the Lawn” at the Kent Town Hall on the opening night of the Sidewalk Festival.The concert features “The Nice Ones” and takes place on Thursday August 6 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

St. Andrew’s Church will once again hold its superb Tag Sale on Friday and Saturday at the Parish Hall.Early Bird Buying on Friday from 8:30 to 10:00 AM ($10 charge). Regular hours Friday and Saturday 10 AM to 3 PM with items ½ price from Noon to 3 PM on Saturday.

The First Congregational Church of Kent will have a bake sale on Friday and Saturday and will feature homemade baked goods by church members.

Kent Memorial Library is chocked full of events during the Festival! Their Annual Book Sale will be in full swing, raffle tickets will be on sale for the 2013 Mustang Convertible as well as a beautifully crafted quilt by the Kent Quilters, and the Chess Court will be alive with chess enthusiasts from amateur to experienced levels.Laughter Yoga will take place Saturday morning, with discussions on the value or laughter in healing the body and lightening the mood!The library also has public bathrooms available during library hours.

Vintage cars parade through town and park on the Kent Green on Saturday August 8 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM during Kent Car Cruise Night.Stop by to check out the cars, enter the 50/50 raffle, and enjoy some music and great food.Free registration.Dashboard plaques and discount coupons for the first 100 registrants.Door prizes too!

Other happenings include “Elvis” at Kent Coffee and Chocolate; samples/tastings of Isagenix weight loss products and foam rolling demos at Mountain Falls Fitness Studio; consultations, basic acupuncture treatments and tongue & pulse diagnosis by Kent Biomedical Acupuncture; temporary tattoos by Printed Village at J.J. Grogans; colorful bird and bat houses handcrafted from reclaimed materials for sale at Country Clothes with proceeds going to Purple Heart Homes USA to help disabled veterans; free eco-friendly shopping bags at Webster Bank, and more!

Art lovers can check out the Kent Art Association’s Annual President’s Juried Show, an exhibit by Gene Davis simply entitled “Large Works” at the Morrison Gallery and a photography exhibit “The Beach” by Steve Eazarsky at the Kent Memorial Library.
