WASHINGTON, D.C. – Swimmers hoping to cool off at Banneker Pool on Friday morning were met with disappointment as the facility was unexpectedly closed due to pump and electrical issues.
Around 11:30 a.m., a visitor named Alex reported the shutdown, noting, “Banneker closed at the moment. Pump/electricity issues.”
No official reopening time was initially shared, leaving many poolgoers wondering if they’d be able to swim before the day ended. The Department of General Services (DGS) later provided an update at 4:39 p.m., announcing that Banneker Pool was once again open for use.
“Banneker Pool is now OPEN! Thanks for your patience,” read the official statement.
The popular Northwest D.C. pool is a regular summer destination, and Friday’s closure came as temperatures began climbing. While the closure caused a temporary inconvenience, DGS staff worked swiftly to resolve the issue and resume operations the same day.
No further disruptions are expected, but regular visitors are encouraged to check DGS social media or the DC Department of Parks and Recreation website for real-time updates on pool availability.
