A 47-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly breaking into a home in Atherton, California, and helping himself to the residents’ food while they were out, according to local police.
Burglary Reported on Lloyden Park Lane
The Atherton Police Department confirmed that Tong Thach, 47, was taken into custody on Tuesday, June 10, after allegedly entering a home on Lloyden Park Lane without permission. The burglary was discovered when the homeowners returned to find signs of forced entry and food missing from their kitchen.
According to Sgt. Jeff Taylor, Thach consumed approximately $20 worth of food, including soda, chips, and leftover noodles. There were no indications that any other property was stolen or damaged during the break-in.
Arrest and Charges
Thach was arrested at 4:40 p.m. on suspicion of felony first-degree burglary, a serious offense under California law. Police say this incident appears to be isolated and not connected to any of the other recent burglaries in the area.
Following his arrest, Thach was booked into San Mateo County Jail and arraigned the next day, June 11, where he pleaded not guilty to a single count of burglary.
Court Proceedings and Release
At the arraignment, the court found probable cause for Thach’s arrest. However, rather than holding him in custody, the judge ordered that he be released under supervised own recognizance. This means Thach will remain free pending trial but must comply with court-imposed conditions and remain under supervision.
His next court appearance is scheduled for July 25, 2025.
Police: No Ongoing Threat
Atherton police emphasized that this case appears to be a standalone incident, not tied to any known burglary spree in the town. Sgt. Taylor added that the residents acted appropriately by contacting authorities immediately upon returning home.
Community Response
While no physical harm or major theft occurred, the incident has left some residents concerned about home security. Local authorities are urging homeowners to remain vigilant, secure their properties, and report any suspicious activity in the area.
Residents are also reminded of the importance of security systems, proper door and window locks, and notifying neighbors or local police when leaving home for extended periods.
Conclusion
Though this burglary involved only a small amount of food, the legal consequences for Thach are serious. The case serves as a reminder that even seemingly minor intrusions are treated as significant crimes under California law. The investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided following the upcoming court proceedings in July.
