STATE POLICE ANNOUNCE DWI CRACKDOWN THIS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

PRESS RELEASE
The New York State State Police will be increasing patrols to crackdown on impaired drivers this Memorial Day weekend from Friday May 22 to Monday May 25.

Memorial Day can be one of the busiest travel holidays of the year and Troopers will be out in force cracking down on impaired drivers. This increase in traffic could also bring increased accidents, serious injuries and fatalities. Troopers will also be out enforcing distracted and reckless driving to help minimize an awful tragedy.

The State Police goal is to maximize DWI enforcement efforts to ensure motorists are not needlessly injured or killed by an intoxicated driver.

“As we remember the men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation, we would like to encourage all motorists to use care while traveling, said New York State Police Superintendent Joseph A. D’Amico. As you travel this holiday weekend we want to remind motorists to buckle up, drive slow, and put down your electronic devices. If you plan on drinking, designate a sober ride home to keep yourself and others safe on our roadways. Troopers will be highly visible throughout the weekend to crackdown on DWI. Have fun, but please be safe this Memorial Day”.

According to the National Highway Safety Administration, drunk driving kills more than 10,000 people every year. In 2012, one person was killed every 51 minutes in an alcohol-impaired driving crash.

Drivers can expect to see sobriety checkpoints, and more troopers on major highways during this holiday weekend.

Troopers will be using both marked State Police vehicles and Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement (CITE) vehicles as part of this crackdown in order to more easily identify motorists who are violating the law. CITE vehicles allow the Trooper to better observe driving violations.  These vehicles blend in with every day traffic but are unmistakable as emergency vehicles once the emergency lighting is activated.

On Memorial Day weekend in 2014 Troopers arrested more than 235 people for DWI and issued more than 12,000 tickets
