Obituary, Gary E. Brabender

Gary E. Brabender, born on September 4, 1951, to the late Katherine and Ed Sr., departed on February 26, 2024, surrounded by the loving warmth of family.

Hailing from the Hudson Valley, Gary established enduring roots in his beloved sylvan locale. In 1970, he graduated from Roeliff Jansen Central High School in Copake, NY. He then devoted 35 years to the Taconic Developmental Disabilities Services Office (DDSO) in Wassaic — the picturesque hamlet proved his forever home.

Gary became a legendary figure in his hometown, a familiar face at the Lantern Inn where his kind demeanor and playful humor earned him a special place in the hearts of his neighbors.

A passionate and knowledgeable sports enthusiast, Gary was the perfect couch companion for a Yankees game. He loved the Jets, too, only those games involved a bit more frustrated yelling at the television. An avid golfer, Gary spent much of his retirement on the greens with his golf buddies.

Gary leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion to his family. Survived by his wife, Cathy Brabender, and their daughters, Shayna Brabender (John Able Jr.) and Jessie Sherman (Timothy Robbins) The 4 little ones who loved and adored their Opa, Malcolm, Harlie, JoJo, and Judith. Gary is also survived by his sister, Darnell Miller, and her children, Kevin and Bruce, as well as his brother, Ed Brabender Jr. (Kim Heath) and, Naomi and Ed III.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, March 4, 2024, at the Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains, NY. A memorial service to celebrate Gary’s life will take place at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. A reception at the Lantern Inn, 10 Main Street, Wassaic, NY will immediately follow.
