DCC, Vassar Model U.N. Team Earns Honors

May 6, 2015 – A team consisting of students from Dutchess Community College and Vassar College was awarded the highest honor bestowed on a student group at the National Model United Nations (NMUN) simulation held in New York City last month. More than 3,000 college students from 47 countries participated in the program.

The joint DCC/Vassar team, known as the Hudson River Group, represented Australia at the NMUN. The students prepared with an academic course that began in January, with the five-day simulation serving as the culminating event.

Along with the Outstanding Delegation Award, the group was awarded seven Outstanding Position Papers awards, earning the Hudson River Group a tie with California State University for the most awards.

The faculty advisors for the Hudson River Group were professors Richard Reitano and Matthew Murray.

The National Model United Nations program is sponsored by the National Collegiate Conference Association, which is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization that promotes understanding of international issues and the United Nations.

National Model United Nations programs provide students with a better understanding of the inner working of the United Nations as they build skills in civics, diplomacy and compromise. Students take on different roles and are required to use effective communication skills to debate and then solve problems.
