Obituary, Lawrence D. Hoag

Lawrence D. Hoag, 78, a lifelong resident of Dover Plains, NY, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Thursday, April 27, 2023. Born on July 27, 1944 in Sharon, CT, he was the son of the late E. Dudley and Gladys (Leonard) Hoag. He was a graduate of Dover Junior-Senior High School Class of 1963. Mr. Hoag was a roofer/tinsmith at Taconic Developmental Disabilities Services Office in Wassaic, NY for 33 years retiring in 1999.

After his retirement, Larry and his wife enjoyed several cruises, traveling across the county as well as camping with friends and spending time at his camp on the river in Queensbury, NY, and later spending winters in Daytona Beach, FL enjoying the warm weather and making great memories and many new friends there.

Larry was always there to help and would do anything to help someone, but never expected anything in return. A “dawn to dusk” man, he’d always find something to do indoors or outdoors from early morning until late evening and said, “There is no time for sleeping during daylight hours.”

A devoted family man, Larry enjoyed all the time he could have with them, spending countless hours with his grandchildren when they were young, teaching them to tie their shoes, ride a bike, play card games, hunt and shoot a gun, drive his old Jeep in the field, fish, water ski and swim. He never missed a baseball, soccer, football, field hockey and lacrosse game no matter what the weather might be. He was always the first one to praise them and say how proud he was of the way they played. One of the things his grandkids will always remember about their Poppa is that his pockets were always full of change that would jingle when he walked. They loved it! He was a great person, loving husband, father and Poppa. Heaven has received a very special man who will be missed here more than he will ever know.

Larry was a 60-year life member of the J. H. Ketcham Hose Company in Dover Plains, NY. An avid sportsman, he loved any outdoor activity he could be part of.

He is survived by his wife, Gale (Collier), two sons, Gordon (Gordy) and his wife, Eileen, and Jay and his wife, Rosa, and grandchildren, Kelly (Dan) Robbins; Matt Hoag (fiancée, Ashley); Alison (Dan) McGovern and Daniel Hoag. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Peyton and Aubree Hoag; Jaxon and Lily Robbins and Reese Rose McGovern and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Brandt Hoag, and Robert Hoag.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, May 1, 2023, at Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains. NY. The J.H. Ketcham Hose Company will conduct firematic services at 7 p.m. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at the funeral home with Rev. Thom Fiet officiating.
