Three-day Amateur Radio Licensing Class Scheduled for April 21-23

Poughkeepsie, NY… The Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response, in partnership with the Mount Beacon Amateur Radio Club, will host a three-day Technician Level amateur radio licensing class on Friday, April 21st from 6:30-8:30pm, Saturday, April 22nd from 8am-5pm, and Sunday, April 23rd from 8am-noon as preparation for an FCC license exam, which will be administered at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The class is open to the public and free to attend. Attending the three-day training is recommended, but not required to take the exam, and registration in advance is required.  The exam is open to all wishing to obtain a license or upgrade their existing license for a $15 exam fee and, upon successful completion, a $35 FCC licensing fee.

Amateur radio, or ham radio, operators can communicate across towns, around the world, or even into space without the internet or a cell phone and are essential resources during emergencies or during recovery efforts following natural disasters such as fires, floods, or hurricanes.

The three-day training and exam will be held at the Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response, located at 392 Creek Road, Poughkeepsie. It is recommended participants obtain the ARRL Ham Radio License Manual 5th Edition prior to the first session.
