Obituary, Charles Harry (Charlie) Dennis

Charles Harry (Charlie) Dennis, 89, of Pawling, NY passed away peacefully during his sleep on Tuesday April 4, 2023.  He was born in Stanfordville, NY on November 28, 1933 to Florence (Swart) and Harry Dennis and was later the stepson of John Layton.

 

Charlie grew up as a farm kid which developed his great love for animals and farming.  He worked for Wiltsie Brothers Excavation in Poughkeepsie, NY straight out of High School and met his wife Barbara Baker during this time.  They married in 1952 and moved to Pawling, NY to live across from Barb’s grandparent’s family farm.  In 1960, they started the Charles H. Dennis Excavating Company together.  During this time he helped extensively in maintaining the Yegella family farm and kept his own personal menagerie of animals.

 

He served in Korea for the U.S. Army between 1959 and 1960.

 

Charlie was pre-deceased by his parents, stepfather, wife Barbara, brothers Henry and Joseph Dennis, sisters Dorothy Storr and Kathryn Dubois, and half-brother Clifford Layton.  Also his brother-in-law and wife, Robert and Judy Baker.

 

He is survived by his sister Irene Eisen of Stanfordville, NY, daughter Terri Dennis of Pawling, NY, son Todd Dennis of Eugene, OR and daughter/son-in-law Tracy and Glenn Matthews of Manassas, VA.  His beloved granddaughters Maddie and Cori survive him in Manassas, VA as well.  Charlie also leaves behind several nephews, nieces, grand nephews and grand nieces who were very dear to his heart.

 

Charlie made many contacts over the years as a long-time business owner and farmer.  As an honorary Pawlingite he became a valued friend to many.  He was always eager and willing to help others and to offer his time and advice.  He cared deeply for his friends and neighbors and was always collecting new friends into his fold.  He will be missed greatly by many.

 

Service will be provided by Horn & Thomes, Inc Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling, NY with viewing from 4-8 pm on Monday, April 10th.  A funeral will take place at Horn & Thomes on Tuesday, April 11th at 11:00 am with immediate burial afterwards at Stanford Cemetery in Stanfordville, NY.
