Hofstra University student Lauren Tocci of Pawling showcases impressive research project.

HEMPSTEAD, NY (01/23/2023)– Pawling’s Lauren Tocci, a Hofstra University student studying Undecided – Communication, presented a research project at Undergraduate Research Day, Monday December 12, 2022. The displays, showcasing months of preparation, investigation, and advanced study, represented individual work under the guidance of an academic advisor. Tocci’s project was titled: Overlay Analysis of Suicide Rate Among Teens in Correlation with State Government Partisan Control in the United States Advisor: Craig Dalton.

Tocci had the opportunity to discuss the research project with attendees of the event, which included faculty, administration, and fellow students. Nearly 70 unique projects across a wide range of disciplines were on display at this bi-annual event.

“It’s really impressive. Students are incredibly engaged with their work; they are excited to talk about their projects; and are very knowledgeable about explaining the details of their projects,” said Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Charlie Riordan as he toured the event, which was held Monday. “I tend to ask a lot of follow-up questions – and these students really understand the work, where it’s headed, what the potential applications are, and how the work fits into their own career interests.”

Dr. Elfreda V. Blue, vice provost for undergraduate academic affairs said Undergraduate Research Day never disappoints.

“I’m just so amazed,” she said. “These experiences are really useful in preparing students for their next phase. They are doing authentic original research and these experiences are having influential impacts on their lives. They are ready for graduate studies or to find their career path.”
