State police identity theft investigation leads to the arrest of a Carmel, NY man who stole over $131,200

On June 29, 2022, State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) Kingston, arrested Yariel Villegas, age 24 from Carmel, NY for Grand Larceny 2nd degree and Identity Theft 1st degree, both felonies.

On October 7, 2021, State Police Kingston were notified by the Mid-Hudson valley Credit Union for a larceny of approximately $131,206.51. State police began an extensive investigation that led them to Yariel Villegas. The investigation revealed that Villegas opened a fraudulent account with the credit union using the stolen the identity of another individual. He then made numerous expensive purchased throughout the Hudson Valley. Some of those fraudulent purchases were jewelry, clothing, and airline tickets.

Yariel Villegas was arraigned in the Town of Ulster Court and was released on his own recognizance.
