Obituary

William James Burke, 85, a 24-year resident of Amenia, NY died peacefully on Saturday, May 28, 2022. Mr. Burke worked in sales and marketing for New York Telephone Company as a telecommunications consultant and manager for the stock brokerage firms on Wall Street for 33 years retiring in 1987.

Born on November 18, 1936 in Tarrytown, NY, he was the son of the late George and Eleanor (Broderick) Burke. He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1962.

Mr. Burke founded the Garrison Volunteer Ambulance Corps, was an active member of the Putnam County and Amenia Historical Societies, the Amenia Lions Club and the Amenia Men’s Golf League. He was a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church in Amenia.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 63 years, Janet A. Burke as well as 5 loving children: Karen Olson and her husband, Mark, of Pleasant Valley, NY; Deborah Chichetti of Ridgefield, CT; Stephen Burke and his wife, Tina, of Hopewell Junction, NY; Clare Blackmon and her husband, Frank, of Montgomery, NY and Kristin Jarvis and her husband, Jeff, of Peekskill, NY. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Shannon, Peter, Allison, Zachary, Ronald, Ian, Matthew, Jake, Lucas, Anna and James and seven great grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Thomas and Kenneth Burke.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at Hufcut Funeral Home, 3139 Route 22, Dover Plains, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 2, 2022 at Immaculate Conception Church, Lavelle Rd., Amenia, NY.
