Obituary

Frieda A. Thompson, 95, a longtime resident of Amenia, NY passed away on Sunday, April 17, 2022, at Sharon Health Care Center in Sharon, CT.

Born on October 3, 1926, in the Bronx, NY she was the daughter of the late Philip and Frieda (Finger) Arms. Frieda graduated High School at the age of 16 after successfully completing 7th and 8th grade in one year at Walton High School in the Bronx.

At age 16, Frieda moved to Amenia to work in Admissions at Viewpoint School. After that, she worked as an aide at the Maplebrook School. She was a telephone operator for a time and later a secretary at Immaculate Conception School in Amenia. She had also worked at Kildonan and Webutuck Schools retiring in 1997 at the age of 71.

Freida was a Cub Scout den mother and also active in Girl Scouts. She was a longtime volunteer at Sharon Hospital and an active member of Smithfield Presbyterian Church in Amenia. Frieda was also a dedicated member of the Dutchess County GOP with over 50 years of service. She was also an avid bowler and belonged to the women’s 600 club; Frieda enjoyed crossword puzzles and spending time with her grandchildren. Frieda was Citizen of the Year for the Amenia Grange in 1983.

In April of 1951, Frieda married Harry Thompson and had five children: Harry Thompson. Jr., and his companion, Donna Brainard, of Pensacola, FL, Susan Colleran and her husband, James, of Ossining, NY, Marion Stone and her husband, Jerome, of Ancram, NY, Louise Thompson of San Diego, CA and Liz Gallagher and her husband, William, of Glenville, NY. She was the proud Gram of eight grandchildren: Joseph Thompson, Thomas, Katie, Timothy and Kieran Colleran and Veronica, Adam, and Bryce Stone and three great-grandchildren: Annie, Declan and Charles Colleran.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2022, at the Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains, NY. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 22, 2022, at the funeral home with Rev. Douglas Grandgeorge officiating. Burial will follow at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, NY.
