Man Struck by Car Closes Route 52 in Lake Carmel for Hours

LAKE CARMEL – A serious accident involving a pedestrian shut down a busy stretch of Route 52 in Lake Carmel for several hours on Thursday evening.

Accident Details

The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Towners Road and Route 52. According to Kent Police, a man in his 40s stepped into traffic and was struck by a vehicle driven by a woman.

Chief Kevin Owens said initial reports from first responders indicated that the pedestrian had stopped breathing after being hit.

Emergency Response

The man was resuscitated at the scene and transported to Danbury Hospital by the Kent EMS Squad. Officials noted that a medivac helicopter was requested but denied because of poor weather conditions at the time.

Multiple emergency agencies responded to assist, including the Lake Carmel Fire Department, the Putnam Bureau of Emergency Services, and Putnam County Emergency Medical Director Robert Cuomo. Members of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department and a New York State Police Accident Reconstruction Team also joined the effort to investigate and manage the scene.

Road Closure

Because of the severity of the accident and the investigation, Route 52 remained closed for several hours, causing significant disruptions for evening commuters. The roadway did not reopen until 10 p.m.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the pedestrian, and the man’s current condition remains unknown.

Community Impact

The long closure of Route 52 — one of the area’s most heavily traveled roadways — highlighted the dangers of pedestrian accidents on busy commuter routes. Police have not indicated whether charges will be filed, as the investigation is ongoing.
