Final Day to Register for the Dutchess County Deputy Sheriff / Police Officer Exam

Final Day to Register for the Dutchess County Deputy Sheriff / Police Officer Exam

The final day to register for the Dutchess County Deputy Sheriff / Police Officer civil service exam is today, Wednesday, August 4, 2021. The exam will be administered by the Dutchess County Department of Human Resources on Saturday, September 18, 2021.

Sheriff Adrian Anderson said, “We are seeking qualified and diverse candidates to register for the civil service exam and today is the final day to sign up. We have worked together in county government to increase the accessibility and success of candidates interested in a career in law enforcement. These efforts include County Executive Marc Molinaro waiving the fees to take the exam, collaborating with the Dutchess County Department of Human Resources and Dutchess Community College, and our Recruitment Team participating in community outreach events and conducting test preparation classes.”

Applications will be accepted through today from candidates who have reached or will reach their 18th birthday by September 18, 2021. Candidates must also possess a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma to be eligible to apply.

After a candidate passes the civil service exam and is canvassed for a position, the candidate must successfully pass a physical fitness test, background investigation and medical exam to be eligible for appointment. Once a candidate is appointed to the position of deputy sheriff / police officer, they will be required to complete 60 college credits within five years of appointment and Crisis Intervention Team training within two years of appointment.

Undersheriff Kirk Imperati said, “We worked closely with Dutchess Community College and reached an agreement where graduates of the Dutchess County Law Enforcement Academy, the local police academy that is directed and coordinated by the Sheriff’s Office Training Bureau, will receive 30 college credits upon successfully completing our academy. A letter of understanding was signed by Sheriff Anderson and the Dutchess Community College administration in January of 2021 to finalize this agreement. We are very appreciative of the support and cooperation we have received from Dutchess Community College.”

Undersheriff Imperati added, “In 2017, the Crisis Intervention Team training was added to our police academy curriculum. Thus, graduates of our police academy will meet the Crisis Intervention Team training requirement and will have 30 of the 60 college credits required. Deputy sheriffs can then complete the final 30 credits at Dutchess Community College at no cost though our college tuition reimbursement program. We are striving to make a law enforcement career attainable for all qualified candidates.”

Candidates are also strongly encouraged to participate in the Sheriff’s Office free test preparation courses.
