On the morning of July 19, 2021, Dorothy Y. Butts “Dottie”, a longtime resident of LaGrange, NY, passed away peacefully at Lutheran Care Center in the town of Poughkeepsie, NY.
Dorothy was born in the Town of Washington, NY, to the parents of James and Mary Yeno, and was raised in Wassaic, NY, were she was the youngest of 8 children.
On January 18, 1948 she married Henry W. Butts. They resided in Pleasant Valley, NY where they raised their 4 children and she helped her husband with his business, The Valley Meat Market. Henry predeceased her on March 22, 1997.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, JoAnn Bedford of Kerhonkson, NY, and two sons, Michael E. Butts (April) of Poughkeepsie, NY and Joe Thomas Butts of AZ. She is also survived by her 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her son Henry J. Butts, three brothers James, Joseph, and John Yeno; four sisters Ann Pruner, Kay Spenard, Ronnie Pultz and Mary Webb. She was also predeceased by her two grandsons.
Once her youngest child started school, Dorothy started a career as a teacher’s assistant in the Arlington school district. She then went on to Dutchess County Boces Salt Point and BETA locations, where she retired in 2014. She was also a member of the Pleasant Valley Ladies’ Auxiliary.
Dorothy was raised on her family farm, where her love for animals started. With her children she began raising sheep, and she and her youngest son began entering their sheep in local fair shows. They traveled to local county fairs throughout New York State, and to other state fairs. Dorothy made many friends and fond memories. She then took her passion for this hobby and started her career as The Dutchess County Fair Sheep Secretary. She was also the Treasurer of the Sheep and Wool Growers Association, serving both roles for many, many years. Her family would know not to plan anything for her around “fair time” as that was her biggest pride and commitment. Dorothy was granted a lifetime pass to the Dutchess County Fair and continued to attend after her retirement in 2014.
Aside from her sheep hobby and traveling with family and friends throughout the years, Dorothy would look forward to her weekly “malling” trips with her sister Kay, where they became the biggest movie critics. They would watch all the new release movies and be sure to share if it was money well spent or not. Dorothy loved basketball and baseball. She enjoyed going to games and watching her Yankees on TV, as well as keeping score of the games. Dorothy was known best for her quick wit and most generous heart. She will be greatly missed by many.

Calling hours for Dorothy will be held from 4 to 6 PM on Friday July 23, 2021, at Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Rt. 22 Dover Plains NY. Funeral services will take place at 10 AM on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at South Dover Rural Cemetery in Wingdale NY.
