Obituary, Philip Nadelman

Obituary

Philip Nadelman, 65, of Wingdale, New York, passed away suddenly of a heart attack at the home he shared with his wife, Theresa Nadelman, on June 1, 2021.

Philip was an artist and musician. His artwork, especially his colored drawings, pastels, collages, and digital images on paper, were quirky and original, ranging from sharply humorous figure studies to lively and sometimes lyrical landscapes. These works were shown in spaces ranging from the Park Avenue Armory in New York City to the Boston Center for the Arts, as well as in Dutchess County venues. More information on his art is available on askART.com.

As a musician, he started as a drummer and branched out to guitar, keyboards, vocals, and song writing. In the 1970s through the early1990s, with fellow musicians Fred Jorio and Eric Kupper, he cofounded and played in the band Chateau Lagune. The band was based in Riverdale, New York, and later the East Village and performed at many venues, including the famed CBGB. Among guest vocalists was the now-well-known subway blues singer Alice Tan Ridley. Philip’s R&B single, “Back Together Again,” inspired by his future wife, Theresa, was featured on the singer Sybil’s 1993 album, Doin’ It Now.

Philip Jan Nadelman was the grandson of acclaimed American sculptor Elie Nadelman, and son of diplomats Jan and Joyce Nadelman. Born in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1955, Philip’s childhood was spent in locations around the world, as his parents were successively stationed by the U.S. State Department in Warsaw and Poznan, Poland; Frankfurt and West Berlin, West Germany; Monrovia, Liberia; and Washington, D.C. He attended schools in these locations, finishing his last two years of high school at the Riverdale Country School after his parents retired in Riverdale. Philip briefly attended Sarah Lawrence College, as well as the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Art Students League in New York City.

In 1997, Philip married Theresa Crean, and in 2008 they moved to their house in Wingdale, where they enjoyed the community and the views of nature right outside their doors. In addition to his wife and their cat Winston, he is survived by his sister, Cynthia Nadelman, and her partner Catherine Tinker, of New York City; and many friends and in-laws. He will be remembered for his warmth, gentle wit, and ability to get along with a wide variety of people.
