The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office reports the investigation into a fatal crash involving a car and motorcycle which occurred on Route 9G at the intersection with Violet Hill Road in Rhinebeck at approximately 12:15 pm on 5/20/21.

The involved vehicles were a 2019 Ducati motorcycle operated by Juan M. Villarreal (age 61 of NYC and Rhinebeck), and a 2009 Ford Ranger pickup truck being operated by Jon H. Nansen (age 75 of Clinton Corners). Preliminary investigation has revealed that the motorcycle was traveling southbound on Route 9G approaching Violet Hill Road when the pickup truck, which was traveling northbound on 9G, made a left-hand turn onto Violet Hill in front of it. The motorcycle then struck the pickup, at which time the motorcycle operator was ejected. Both operators were transported to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital, where Mr. Villarreal was ultimately pronounced dead.

The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Unit and Detective Bureau, however at this time the primary factor appears to be failure to yield right of way on the part of the pickup operator. Anyone who may have been in that area and witnessed either all or part of the crash is asked to contact Detective Wilber at 845-486-3826 or bwilber@dutchessny.gov. Information can also be provided via the Sheriff’s Office tipline at 845-605-2583 or dcsotips@gmail.com, and all information will be kept confidential.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the New York State Police, Rhinebeck Fire Department, Hillside Fire Department, and Northern Dutchess Paramedics. More information may be released as it becomes available.
