November is National Diabetes Awareness Month
We’d Like to Discuss Pre-Diabetes

Fred’s doctor told him he was pre-diabetic.

His father had type 2 diabetes, he was 55, overweight and didn’t have time for exercise – all risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes. Having prediabetes means your blood glucose (sugar) levels are higher than normal—but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Prediabetes can lead to heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes, the most common form of diabetes.

Fred was familiar with the complications of diabetes but wasn’t sure where to start until his doctor suggested the National Diabetes Prevention Program. If you have prediabetes, the CDC-recognized lifestyle change program is one of the most effective ways to prevent getting type 2 diabetes. It can help you lose weight, become more active, and prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.

The goal of the year-long program is for participants to lose 5-7% of their body weight and add 150 minutes of activity per week. It’s a gradual process with a full year of support from a trained lifestyle coach. The curriculum includes sessions on Getting Active, Eating Well, Managing Stress, Staying Motivated and more.

In the fall, Fred signed up for a virtual Diabetes Prevention Program offered by Putnam Independent Living Services. He liked the idea of a full-years support from a lifestyle coach and the other people in the group, after all, they would all be working toward the same goal.

Three months into the program Fred and his group are starting to see results. All have increased their activity. All are making changes in meal planning and snacking and are working toward healthier eating.

Putnam Independent Living Services (PILS) is offering the National Diabetes Prevention Program virtually to adults 18 or older throughout Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess County’s, both online and by conference call. New workshops are starting in January 2021 – a great time to make a New Years’ Resolution.

If you’re not sure if you’re at risk, take the online test at https://www.putnamils.org/diabetes-prevention-program/ or ask your health care professional about getting a blood sugar test.
