SEATTLE, Wash. – A planned religious concert that initially sought to take place in Cal Anderson Park, a location deeply significant to Seattle’s LGBTQ+ community, will now be held at Gas Works Park following discussions between city officials, community members, and event organizers.
Balancing Rights and Community Concerns
The decision came after concerns were raised by LGBTQ+ residents about the symbolic weight of Cal Anderson Park, which has long served as a space of identity, pride, and community gathering. While city leaders emphasized that they could not relocate the event unilaterally based on content or viewpoint, they facilitated conversations with organizers to seek an alternative site.
“According to the law, the City cannot deny or unilaterally relocate permits for public spaces based on the content of the speech or the impacts of that speech on the community,” Mayor Bruce Harrell and Councilmember Joy Hollingsworth explained in a joint statement.
By working collaboratively, organizers ultimately agreed to shift the concert to Gas Works Park, a move that officials said honors both constitutional protections of free expression and the dignity of marginalized communities.
