Ayurvedic and Naturopathic Physician, Dr Somesh N. Kaushik, is presenting an online health lecture for the Pawling Library each month. His most recent seminar took place on Wednesday, July 29 at 7:00 pm and the main topic of the evening was Insomnia.

Both acute and chronic insomnia were discussed in detail, including the many physical and emotional ailments  that are attributed to insufficient sleep, ranging from stress to heart disease.

In the midst of a pandemic, stress is everywhere we go. People are filled with anxiety and suffering from depression. “It is a state of disharmony,” said Dr. Kaushik.  He went on to say, “In general our goal is to create balance.”

The doctor examined the causes of insomnia, and the foods, herbs and natural supplements that may aid in reducing stress and help to promote sleep. The benefits of exercise and mediation were also explored.

“Sleep is necessary for survival and optimum physical health,” said Dr, Kaushik.  At the end of his program, participants had gained a vast amount of knowledge that they could then apply to help them correct interrupted sleep patterns and bouts of or prolonged insomnia. Some have reached out to thank us for coordinating this program. “It was very informative,” said one individual, and like many in attendance, also registered for Dr. Kaushik’s  upcoming August seminar that we are looking forward to.
