POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – A local police search in the City of Poughkeepsie has expanded into a large-scale federal operation, with FBI agents and specialized equipment now assisting at a Smith Street property.
Initial Warrant Execution
On Wednesday morning, Poughkeepsie police, aided by New York State Police and the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, executed a search warrant at 44 Smith Street, a commercial site housing On the Spot Taxi. The FBI Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force joined the operation shortly after the warrant was served.
Authorities have not disclosed the purpose of the search. However, a source close to the investigation told Mid-Hudson News that officers may be looking for a body, or remains linked to a crime that occurred in the past.
Escalation of the Search
Throughout Wednesday, officers remained at the site, using a gas-powered saw to access the rear portion of the building. By nightfall, police secured the area and maintained their presence on the property.
By Thursday morning, the scene had transformed into what resembled a law enforcement encampment. Multiple FBI agents arrived along with tents, large response vehicles, a flatbed tow truck, and portable bathrooms placed inside the secured perimeter.
FBI Activity Observed
Witnesses reported seeing FBI personnel dressed in Tyvek coveralls near the rear building’s entrance. Other agents gathered under pop-up tents set up overnight, appearing to coordinate search efforts.
Despite the heightened activity, officials have remained tight-lipped about the focus of the investigation. Law enforcement sources have emphasized to nearby residents that there is no threat to public safety.
Investigation Continues
As of Thursday evening, the property at 44 Smith Street remains under heavy police and FBI presence. Officials have not confirmed whether any evidence has been recovered, and the search is expected to continue until further notice.
