Two Critical Road and Bridge Construction Projects
Scheduled in East Fishkill and Beekman
Preliminary work on Beekman Road underway
Poughkeepsie… Two of the Dutchess County Department of Public Works’ (DPW) most anticipated road and bridge construction projects of this year are moving forward in the towns of East Fishkill and Beekman:
- Reconstruction of approximately two miles of Beekman Road (CR-9) between the Taconic State Parkway and Sylvan Lake Road (CR-10).
- Replacement of Bridge E-8 over the Fishkill Creek on Phillips Road.
Preliminary work on Beekman Road is anticipated to begin this week and the Phillips Road bridge project is expected to begin later in the spring. These two critical projects are being done concurrently to minimize the impact on residents and commuters, while improving the quality and safety of these two important roadways.
Preliminary project work on Beekman Road will include tree removal and clearing of shoulder areas. The total project, which received final approval from the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) in February, includes extensive reconstruction with new pavement and curve realignments, as well as improved drainage, signage, and expanded shoulders. During construction, Beekman Road will remain open and access to local businesses and driveways will be maintained. However, there will be frequent lane closures and traffic delays should be anticipated. The full project is expected to take approximately 15 months to complete.
Beekman Road is one of Dutchess County’s most utilized roadways. The roadway section between the Taconic State Parkway and Sylvan Lake Road where the work will be completed averages approximately 10,000 vehicles per day.
The Phillips Road bridge project includes building a new, wider bridge to accommodate the addition of shoulders. During construction, Phillips Road will be closed near the Park Place intersection with a posted detour directing traffic along State Route 216, Green Haven Road (CR-8), and Beekman Road (CR-9). Phillips Road averages approximately 2,500 vehicles per day.
Due to the extent of the improvements to be made, and the projects’ overlapping routes, frequent lane closures and delays should be anticipated. School buses and emergency service vehicles will be given priority through the work zones. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes during the construction period to avoid delays. If travel through the construction area cannot be avoided, motorists should plan for additional time and exercise extra caution, obey the posted speed limits, traffic advisory signs, and the directions from flaggers in the work zone to ensure the safety of workers and other motorists.
