Obituary, Marlena Mittel

Amenia – Marlena Mittel, 78, a twenty-year resident of Amenia, NY formerly of Queens, NY died peacefully on Friday, November 29, 2019, at Sharon Hospital in Sharon, CT surrounded by her loving family. Ms. Mittel was a self-employed housekeeper in the local area for many years.

Born November 2, 1941, in Manhattan, NY she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Bertha (Rehl) Mittel. She graduated from Long Island City High School and earned an Associate’s Degree later in life. She married Kenneth Whelan. Mr. Whelan died previously. She was a longtime parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church in Amenia. Ms. Mittel was a woman of great taste and style and had a knack for interior design. She loved arts and crafts and sewing and her attention to detail often made her the brunt of the joke, her sons loved to tease her about ironing the pillowcases among other things. She enjoyed frequenting the local shops and eateries and was known and loved by many. She will be dearly missed.

Ms. Mittel is survived by three sons; Patrick T. Whalen and his wife Kristine of Pleasant Valley, NY, Kenneth Whalen of Brooklyn, NY and Michael Whalen and his wife Rosetta of Center Moriches, NY, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and eight sisters. She was predeceased by four brothers.

Calling hours will take place on Wednesday, December 4, 2019, from 7-9 pm at  37 Park Avenue, Millerton, NY 12546. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, December 5, 2019, at 11 am at Immaculate Conception Church, 4 Lavelle Road, Amenia, NY. Reverend R. Kent Wilson will officiate. Interment will be private.
