Obituary, Frank Schmalzl

Frank Schmalzl, passed away Sunday morning, April 12, 2015. He was 91 years old.

Besides his parents, Ludwig and Frances Torok Schmalzl, he was predeceased by his brother, John. Frank is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann; his children, Amy Bridenstine, her husband Mark and their children Joseph and Hannah of Indianapolis, IN and Thomas and his wife Nicole of Stamford, CT. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Mabel and his nieces, Donna McCann and her husband Tom, and Denise McGinty and her husband Jim.

Frank had recently relocated to Stamford, CT after spending most of his life in Patterson, NY. He raised his family there while working more than 30 years for Eastern Airlines. Always diligent in his commitment to hard work and serving others, Frank was an active member of the community and his Church. Beloved for his gentle spirit and colorful storytelling, Frank was welcome company on soccer sidelines, church functions and at school events.

In his retirement years, he was able to devote even more time to serving those around him. An active member of Patterson’s Democratic Party, he was elected to multiple terms as town councilman. He also worked every day at the Sacred Heart Church rectory in Patterson serving as secretary, bookkeeper, and sexton. Having served in the second World War, Frank was proud to represent WW2 veterans each year at the annual Putnam Lake Memorial Day parade as one of the town’s last survivors of that conflict. After moving to Stamford in 2013, Frank became a member of St. Bridget of Ireland Roman Catholic Church.

Friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home and Crematory, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford CT on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 from 4:00 to 8:00PM. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:10AM on Thursday, April 16, 2015 for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM at St. Bridget of Ireland Roman Catholic Church, 278 Strawberry Hill Avenue, Stamford, CT. Burial will follow at Fairfield Memorial Park Cemetery, Oaklawn Avenue, Stamford.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Frank’s memory to New Covenant House, 90 Fairfield Ave., Stamford, CT 06902, his favorite charity.
