Obituary, John J. Hickey

Blauvelt – John Joseph Hickey of Blauvelt, NY died on October 4, 2019 at the age of 76. John was originally from Newmarket-on-Fergus in County Clare, Ireland. In 1962, he emigrated to the USA at the age of 19 to New York City. On May 5, 1966, he married Pauline O’Hara from Co. Sligo and lived in Woodside, Queens. In 1977, his family moved to Blauvelt, NY. For over 50 years, John worked as a manager of the Aquatics Dept at the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) before retiring.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline, and their three children – Bernadette, Vincent and John. He is lovingly remembered by his grandchildren – Colin, Vincent, Caitlyn, Muriel and Chelsea as well as his siblings – Mary Schlitt, Patrick Hickey and Michael Hickey of Ennis. He is predeceased by his oldest brother, Michael, who died at 20 months old, and by his sisters, Teresa Malone and Shelia Heyeck.

John will be remembered for his positive outlook on life and his passion for golf. He was a founding member of the Rockland Irish American Cultural Center, Gaelic Golf Club, The Links at Union Vale Golf Course and Celtic Golf Club. John proudly served on the Orangetown Golf Committee for over 35 years.

John will be waked on Friday, October 11th at Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home in Pearl River, NY from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. The funeral Mass is at St. Catherine R. C. Church in Blauvelt at 10 am, Saturday, October 12th. He will be buried with his parents, Denis and Margaret Hickey, in Fenloe Graveyard in Co. Clare, Ireland overlooking the thatched cottage on Fenloe Lake, where he was born.
