Washington, D.C. – Residents of Mount Pleasant gathered in an act of solidarity and resistance after reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity shook their community. Within just an hour’s notice, dozens of neighbors came together in the plaza — a place many described as their community’s “living room” — to stand against fear and reclaim the space with music, art, and messages of resilience.
A Community Responds to Fear
According to residents, ICE presence in Mount Pleasant left many families frightened and uncertain, particularly children in the neighborhood. One local resident described the atmosphere:
“Dozens of people came out on barely an hour’s notice and there was music, and we were all passing information and encouragement and plans on how to support the community and each other,” they shared. “While cop cars did slow circles around the plaza and eventually parked right next to us.”
The gathering was not only a show of resistance but also an effort to share resources and ensure neighbors knew where to turn for support.
Turning Fear Into Strength
Community member Chelsea said the gathering was about reclaiming a sense of safety and belonging in a space that has long served as a hub for residents.
“ICE terrorized my neighborhood of Mount Pleasant today so we reclaimed the plaza — our community living room — with joy and love and messages of resilience,” Chelsea said. “Thank you to everyone who turned out, let’s do it again! These few photos do not do it justice.”
Neighbors say the act of coming together — with music, messages, and mutual support — helped counter the fear caused earlier in the day.
Plans for Future Gatherings
Organizers are already looking ahead, with plans for an art session outside Bancroft Elementary and Sacred Heart schools. The goal is to give children, many of whom may have been deeply affected by recent events, a safe and creative outlet to express themselves and process their experiences.
“I can’t imagine how scared and scarred so many kids are right now,” one community member said, emphasizing the importance of protecting and uplifting the neighborhood’s youth.
Resilience in the Face of Uncertainty
While concerns about immigration enforcement continue, Mount Pleasant residents say they are determined to support one another and reclaim spaces of fear with solidarity and hope. The plaza gathering, filled with joy and community spirit, served as a reminder of the neighborhood’s strength.
As residents put it, the effort was about more than just resisting fear — it was about reaffirming that Mount Pleasant belongs to its community, and that unity is the most powerful response to intimidation.
